According to Kris, Ethiopia is a destination you can easily tour on your own. If you do decide to go with a tour operator, pick the company carefully to avoid a disappointing experience...

If going to Ethiopia and planning to see the country outside the capital, get a good guidebook and trek out on your own.
I Tried out Ethiopian Rift Valley Safaris due to time pressures on the northern route in mid December 2007 for 8 days, but it was disappointing and a poor value for the money.
They performed poorly - the manager was completely scattered and forgot to meet her side of the commitments ...some things she did after being reminded, but others she completely failed to do, such as drop off vouchers at the hotel and arrange for airport pick up on the last day.
She didn't seem to have a clear idea of what was included in the tour or how the logistics were supposed to work, and this was a very standard tour of the north.
In spite of this there were some highlights like Lalibela, the rock hewn churches! Amazing.
We stayed in government run hotels where the rooms are decent but every one in every city is the same in layout and furniture, which can either be comforting or disconcerting.
Food at the hotel is bland and boring.
Get a guidebook and go on your own! Don't use ERVS. I rate this safari as a 2 on a scale of one to ten.
