This was the eighth trip to the Kruger game reserve for Jes but she hasn't been for many years because of moving over to Australia from South Africa. She was really glad to be back after all this time. Accommodation:Berg and Dal and Crocodile Bridge camps in bungalows which are round-walled single-roomed African style units with thatched roofs. 2 or 3 beds per unit, equipped with en-suite ablutions (most with showers, but some with baths). Trip Highlights: The pool at the Berg and Dal camp resembles a waterhole and Jes and her companions decide it would be ideal for a moonlight swim with millions of stars blazing in the sky above. A group of about 15 elephants ranging in age from the old matriarch to toddlers and they were all eating from the trees, using them to scratch their backs and then, very unusually, they lay down on their sides in the shade. Elephants don't normally do this as it puts them at risk from potential predators. Six white rhino grazing along the side of the road. There are black rhino in the park too but they are very scarce and if you spot one of those it's like winning the lottery. A herd of buffalo numbering in the thousands and a mock charge from a bull elephant who was more than a little irritated. Driving down the road from Lower Sabi to Skukuza they spot a large male leopard majestically crossing the road. Split second timing because in a matter of moments he is gone from view, swallowed up by the vegetation. Soon after they saw the leopard they came across a lion couple mating only 3 metres from the side of the road. Every ten minutes like clockwork. An incredible and very rare sight to see.
