Tom realised a lifelong ambition to go to Africa by taking a trip to the Moremi game reserve situated in the Okavango Delta area of Botswana. Accommodation:The 4th bridge luxury tented camp complete with en-suite toilet and "open bucket shower" which means you get to shower with a view of the stars and Xunaga Lodge which was reached by boat farther upriver. Highlights:A pride of lion on the first morning drive lounging on top of a termite mound about thirty yards from the safari vehicles. Stopped for breakfast at a nearby lagoon after the lions had padded off into the bush. On this safari, the animals find you. A herd of over 30 elephant meandered through the bush about 100 yards from the camp and one of the young juveniles lifted his trunk to smell the trucks and did a shake of his head and a stomping of his feet to impress the other members of his herd. A large herd of buffalo that were being stalked by some lions revealed very interesting animal behaviour. The bigger males take up position on the outside of the group for protection while the females and younger individuals bunch up in the middle. Hiking through the bush in a group with elephant, giraffe and hippo as occasional companions is a very special experience and was another highlight of the safari. A pair of endangered wild dog lying in the grass watching impala grazing is a great way to start a morning drive. An extremely rare sighting of a flock of over a million quelea birds so numerous that they blacked out the horizon in their flight path and generated a rush of noise with their wings beating the air.
