Tanya is a travelholic having visited over thirty countries already and planning on many more. When she is not on a jaunt across the globe she stays in Wellington, New Zealand. One of her dreams trips was to get to see the Serengeti Tanzania...

Accommodation:

Stayed at Seronera, Simba, Tarangire  campsites in the Park. The campsites are not fenced so you get to experience the wildlife up close.

Trip Highlights:

A leopard had stashed a half eaten gazelle up a tree and after marking the spot they returned later to find the beautiful cat feasting on it's supper. (thumbs up to the safari guide for going back).

Saw all of the big five (leopard, lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino) over the course of the three game drives but didn't manage to find cheetah.

Listening to the night sounds of various birds, hyenas and lions at the campsite and the excellent cooking.

Having lunch on the way to the park and being joined by a Maasai boy of about 13 with his herd of cows and two dogs.

Tanya has this to say about her trip..."It's impossible to describe the weekend in detail and probably pointless. It was pure natural magic."

Serengeti Tanzania Tips & Recommendations:

  •  If you are willing to rough it, the camping option on a safari is a really affordable one and you do feel a lot closer to nature because you can hear all the night noises. Something to keep in mind is that water for showers though usually available is not guaranteed.

  • If you are taking photos using film, remember to bring at least two rolls for each day. Tanya only had two for the whole Serengeti Tanzania weekend and she had to be very selective. Even better, make the switch to digital wildlife photography.

  • Bring spare batteries for your camera because they will go flat at the worst times and you don't want to miss those once in a lifetime photo opportunities. When Tanya was in the Ngorongoro Crater area her camera batteries went flat and she unfortunately didn't have any spares so she had to buy new ones in Arusha later.
