Our first safari of our 8 day trip through eastern South Africa was in the St Lucia Wetland Park. African Wildlife Tours did an excellent job and the enthusiasm of the guide was overwhelming, especially for us being new to safaris.

It is difficult to describe the safari in a few words but being with wildlife on New Years day with the Indian Ocean in the background is a thrill.

We did manage to see the big five throughout the week we were in South Africa (also went to Hluhluwe-Imfolozi and Kruger).

We stayed mainly in lodges of excellent quality, in or outside the parks.

If you have never done a safari, book a private toured one, allowing you to do as you like and have excellent views from the vehicle.

Forget about time and do look in the air for the birds you do not get to see at home.
