Weixia went to Zimbabwe by Greyhound bus from Johannesburg to visit her family in Harare. She had a great time and didn’t want to leave.

Accommodation:

Jollyboys Backpackers (Zambia) was a great spot to stay - she felt she could have stayed there much longer.

Trip Highlights

It was evident from the start of her Victoria Falls Zimbabwe holiday that corruption is rife in this beautiful country when the jolly customs official at the border entry popped her US$70 visa fee straight into his shirt pocket, making no electronic record of her entry.

They passed villages, domestic animals including donkeys and goats, and beautiful scenery on the way to Harare where she and her friend spent one night with her uncle and aunt.

She was sad to see most of the stalls and even shops selling fresh produce and crafts have disappeared or closed because of the inflation and terrible currency decline. It was even worse to realise the state that Zimbabwe’s in, is all down to one man’s love of power.

Some farms have just been left to die.

Given the political situation and extreme poverty in the country, she was surprised to find no sign of depression among the people who instead displayed warmth, patience and hope.

Seeing the Victoria Falls Zimbabwe was the highlight of their trip. The masses of water spilled over the cliffs in full force, spraying on to them and soaking them to the skin.

Their visit coincided with full moon so they got to see beautiful rainbows in the spray of the Falls, in the moonlight … a memorable sight.

Another highlight of the trip was visiting an exemplary farm and seeing the Zimbabwean countryside upon their return to Harare.

Victoria Falls Tour Tips & Recommendations:

  • Because of the dire petrol shortages in Zimbabwe, rather drive to Victoria Falls Zimbabwe via the beautiful Kariba Dam and Zambia. People in Zim queue at petrol stations for days on end in the vague hope for some of this precious fluid.

  • Around Victoria Falls Zimbabwe area, there are plenty activities like going on a “booze cruise” on the Zambezi river in the company of hippos, horse riding and microlight flights over the Falls.
