Four Top Rated Zanzibar
Hotels
This
unspoilt island paradise is blessed with an abundance of quality Zanzibar
hotels.
In fact, there are so many that
it soon becomes difficult to choose between them because they all sound so good.
But this list can help you with the decision.
The top four ranking of Zanzibar
hotels below is based primarily on trip reviews submitted at Tripadvisor by
people who have actually visited the resorts on their holidays and travel
journals, websites, forum posts, travel guides and magazines that contain
information about Zanzibar accommodation.

1. Chumbe Island Coral
Park
Location: This tiny, coral ringed island is a ten minute drive
to the south of Stonetown. From there you catch a boat which leaves at 10am
every day for the 30 minute trip across the channel.
Accommodation: There are only a maximum of 14 guests allowed on
this amazing island at a time and they are housed in seven bandas (bungalows)
constructed in a very eco friendly way from wood and thatch.
The best part of this construction is that you can actually lower the whole
side wall of your top story bedroom using a pulley to look out onto the sea and
let the gentle lapping of the waves wash you to sleep. Something you won't find
in any of the other Zanzibar hotels.
Eating:
Tea and coffee is brought to your door early in the morning but all other meals
are taken in the main building which is a wonder of eco design. No menu to
choose from but there is a vast array of dishes to choose from like
smooth fish cakes and
crunchy stir-fried vegetables, a light and creamy chicken curry or a steaming
pancake wrapped up dollops of orange and lemon preserve.
Activities:
Snorkelling, guided forest walks, intertidal walks (to see the giant crabs),
lighthouse ascent and
Day-trips to Stone Town, Jozani Forest and the
Spice Gardens.
2. Pongwe Beach Hotel
Location: Situated on the north-eastern coast of Zanzibar this
beach is 35km drive on a good tarmac road from Stonetown. One of the Zanzibar
hotels located along a pristine, relatively isolated beach.
Accommodation:
As far as tropical beach
accommodations go, this one takes a lot of beating.
Situated on what is arguably one
of the best beaches in Zanzibar this hotel consists of ten beach front cottages
with private terraces where you can enjoy a relaxing breakfast while soaking up
the amazing views and sunshine.
Eating: As far is the cuisine is concerned, seafood is not surprisingly the
speciality and a typical evening meal will consist of a starter of fresh crab,
fresh tuna steaks piled on a bed of roasted veggies as the main course and crème
brule or fresh tropical fruit salad for desert.
Activities: You can go snorkelling out at Mnemba Atoll where you can will find
many coral species and marine life; and at Kizimkazi where sharks,
dolphins and turtles can be found.
Scuba diving can be arranged whether it be a day dive or a Padi open water
course.
3. Breezes Beach Club
Location: This resort is located 60km (90 min drive) from
Stonetown on the south-eastern side of Zanzibar.
Accommodation: Ten double story houses a short walk from the
beach and a row of bungalows set a little farther back inland. They have a
distinctly European character which could be a disappointment but they contain
all the mod cons like air conditioning, fridge and safe box.
Eating:
You will never need to go hungry here as there are no less than four restaurants
to cater to your every culinary whim and two bars to quench your sun induced
thirst.
Activities: You may have chosen Zanzibar hotels to relax but the amount of
things available to do at this resort will sorely tempt you. Diving, swimming,
snorkelling, sunbathing, cycling, tennis, windsurfing, canoeing, hikes and spa
treatments are all on offer here.
4. Serena Inn Zanzibar
Hotels
Location: On the sea front of the historic
Stone Town on the western side of Zanzibar Island.
Accommodation: Ocean view rooms (sleeping up
to 2 adults and 1 child) with air-conditioning, one king size or twin beds,
bath/shower with hot and cold water, hairdryer, radio, satellite TV, safe box,
minibar, private balcony and a telephone.
Eating: Seafood is the speciality of most of
the Zanzibar hotels but here a
team of trained chefs is used in the preparation of a large variety of meals.
Activities: Walking/hiking, canoeing, explore the city,
shopping, diving/snorkelling, water sports, day excursions and swimming pool.
