African Travel Review

by Dianne Piccoli
(USA)

We saw it all: leopards, lions, cubs, rhino and baby rhino, elephants, baby elephants, bush baby and more. We also had a micro flight in Victoria Falls which was great; visited cultural area in Rwanda where we felt very welcome; Soweto area; genocide memorials.

Safari Company Performance
The safari company's performance was great. Special treats included the returning from safaris and having a bubble bath waiting.

We were 3 people in our group, including me, and we drove with open Land Rovers.

The guides were excellent.

All of it was a highlight - very difficult to choose one over another.
Accommodation
Cape Town - Arabella Western Cape was very nice.

In Stellenbosch - Lanzerac was luxurious.

Johannesburg - Protea Hotel Wanderers, nice hotel, but did not like the location - too residential.

At Kings Camp (Timbavati) they left personal notes to us and Kirkmans Camp (Sabi Sands) was excellent - both could not do enough.

Also airport hotel, David Livingstone Safari Lodge (Vic Falls), Virunga, Southern Sun, Lodge Rwanda, Kigali Serena hotel.

The food was prepared very good in all lodges.

Typical Day
The day was very organized: up at 5:30am, off for safaris, back for breakfast, free to do whatever you want, lunch and 4pm safari.

We returned at 7pm and had dinner. It was very easy to go to bed at 10pm, we were up so early.

Disappointments
There weren't really any disappointments. My thoughts were: "Did it take so long to return to Africa?"
Tips and Advice
Africa is safer than most people think; all the safaris were set up to make you feel very secure.

Sun tan lotion was very useful. We did not over-pack, so everything was the right things to take. Layering clothing is important.
